Common Interest

Filed under: ESL Students' Writings — liuzejin @ 07:21

Life was like a box of chocolate. You never know after you’re going to get.  My name is Jin. In the year of 2012, I moved in the United States. Rosemead Adult School was my first school, like most immigrant students, I was interested in almost everything in this country and everything we did was new and different. Although we came from different counties and cities, we have shared common interest-American girls.

In the first day of school, I met a guy. His name is Kai. He is from China and the same state with me. Before I wanted to know him because his English is better than mine. So I sit down on the seat behind the guy. Two weeks passed, Kai had found a park and he had asked me to play basketball.  After class we went to the park and while we were playing, someone came and asked us to play a game. While playing, I knew their names and we were in same school also we talked about the interest thing about girls. Sometimes I think what boys talk about is funny. Because conversations are always about girls, who are the most beautiful in the class, how many girlfriends you have had, and what kind of girls are the sexiest. As for me, sometimes I still avoid those answers, But I listened because they were interesting.

One day, after a usual basketball game, we went to eat and they never stopped talking about girls on the way. When we arrived at the restaurant, Kai saw two girls coming in and sit next to our table. At once, the conversation transferred to the two girls.I think the girls were not Chinese but were the same age as us. Maybe they were high school students. They look cute. That was all in my mind. Suddenly, one of friends named is Holu said whoever can get their number he would pay for his meal. Kai said to me, “Hey Jin you go”.  “No” I said. “Okay. I’ll go” said Kai. He got up and started talking to the two girls. He used the not fluent English said “I lost my phone could I borrow your phone.” The girls looked at him and they seem do not want to lend. As for us, we laughed and could not stop.

In the end, Kai has got her phone number and Holu treated us that day.  As of now, some friends were gone. But when boys get gather, we are still talking about girls.

My Childhood

My childhood life looks like an intriguing book. As a child, I did many interesting and stupid things. There are some memories that are blurry to me now, but there are still some unforgettable things in my memory. My most unforgettable memory was I drunk cleanser as milk.
When I was six years old, I liked drinking milk very much. One day, I saw my mother used milk as a face mask. Thus I thought milk could be anything. That was amazing. And my mother had a milk cleanser that looked like milk. One day, my mother went to market but I am at home. I want to drink some milk but no more. I tried to drink the milk cleanser. It felt wrong decide and tasted so bad. Then I vomited and washed my mouth. Suddenly, I hit the cleanser bottle and lost some cleanser. I didn’t know what to do. Then I put into some milk in cleanser bottle and shook it. Finally, my mother found it. But my mother just laughed me. She said, “You’re so cute.”
Until today, I still remember I drunk cleanser. Even several years after, it is funny experience in my mind. I will talking to my grandchild as my childhood story when I became grandma.

Good Government Policies

Filed under: ESL Students' Writings — Tags: — zhoujie @ 20:50

There are several good government policies in the United States. For instance, the best thing was no matter how old you were, you always had a chance to go to a college whenever you wanted to. And also, for all community colleges if you were California residents or citizens, you could apply either financial aid or fee waiver to cover expensive tuition fee. In addition, all universities had financial aid program as well. As long as you were full-time students, financial aid approved, you will get around thousands for a year. Although books were very expensive in the United States. It’s better to find a store which was near to the school to buy used ones. Then you could save a lot of money on it. So you didn’t have to worry too much about the tuition fees.

To give another example, since U.S economy has became very poor in couple years, a lot of people lost their jobs. But the government tried to save as many as enterprises they could. Expect that if you paid taxes every year, you could apply EDD which was called Employment Development Department

to get monthly income for twelve months. It was excellent for someone who lost jobs immediately and gave them some times to resolve their problems. Such as, house rental, monthly credit card payments, cars loans, insurances and so on. During a year, the government wanted you to go to a school to learn a skill. And if you did, show your approved, they will apply another half year for you.

To give one last example, there were a lot of seniors or retirees came to the United States because it was the best place to live out their life in retirement. First of all, it’s quiet, and nice weather. Not so cold as China during the winter. And In the United States, you would see so many apartments for seniors (55 years or older) in every cities. It’s not cost too much every months. Secondly, if they needed a ride to go some places, they could call shuttles to pick them up and drop off. It’s not necessaryto call their children anymore. This service was only for seniors who were U.S citizens.

I hope the policies will become better and better in the future.Let every person have better protection.

My best friend TVC has so many good trail. One of  his good trail is helpful. He is a helpful person, he likes helping people . He used to help me a lots.

One example happened three year ago, when we were in high school together. One of my classmate, his name is Vincent and he got sick. He couldn’t go to school and missed classes. No one in class help him but TVC. One day , TVC didn’t see Vincent come to class anymore, then he thought it would be something wrong. He found out that he got sick . He asked teacher Vincent’s phone number and address. He came to Vincent’s house and helped him to catch up with class. Ove week later, Vincent got well and came to class. He hasn’t missed anything, TVC helped him a lots.

To give another example, I am a student so bad at math , i always get low score for my math test. My score was about 50%-60%. TVC voluntered to be my math tutor,  to help me to improve my math skill. He told me to practice more , and my math skill would get better soon . He spent all his free time to help me . I was so worry , because the final test is coming , and if my math skills don’t get better ,i would fail that test. Finally , i got high score from my final test , after so many day study hard with TVC. I was so happy.

One more example took place a few months ago , I was on the way to school by motocycle. My school is kind of far from my house like 30 minutes away. I was taking freeway , and this car was driving behind me and hit me suddenly. i fell down and my hand hurts a lots and bloods were falling down. I was so nervous and did not know what to do. I called my house and there was no one pick up the phone, and i called my best friend TVC to help. He was in class and he left class to come with me . He helped me eveything , and went to hopital with me.

TVC is a helpful people. A good friend with good trail that I never had. I’ve learn how to be helpful person from him.

Noise Pollution

Noise pollution is the popular situation in my country. The main source of noise pollution is transportation systems. It is produced from road traffic, rail traffic, from air craft, especially from motor vehicle. When people are in stuck at the traffic light or in the traffic  jam, some of them keep pressing the horn to force people in the front to move forward althought the light is still red. It likes they are too busy or just have no patience to wait for the green light. Unless they move forward, the noise makers will press the horn stronger, louder or sometimes say bad words. It’s such a bad behavior that we still can’t do anything to prevent it.

The second problem is about the audio entertainment systems from the musical instruments, like TV, Radio, AC, Fans, Mixers, or from shops along the street. We could call it neighborhood noises. Althought the owners try to open the music as loud as possible to get the concerntration from the customers, they never know that has a bad effect on their neighbors. Especially to the elder or the students. They need more peace time to rest, relax or study. Irritating noise at work place reduces concentration efficiency and working capacity.

Noises in all areas have been increasing rapidly. And noise pollution also happpens badly in some bad urban areas. Poor urban planning gives rise to noise pollution. People argue easily for just the small problems. When they are drunk or in the bad mood, they could throw whatever they’ve got or in the first seen and shouting. It makes a chaotic situation that nobody wants to see.

As a result, exposure of high level of noise gives rise to stress factor in modern life. The effect of noise on health depends on both, loudness and frequency. In my opinion, giving knowledge of noise pollution to everybody is also helpful in controlling noise pollution.
