How is American culture different from that of your country?
If you are from Asia, you’ll find American culture is so different from that of your own country. You may have experienced some cultural shock here in America. Do you want to share your stories with other people?
Actually, I have found out that American culture is really diffierent from that of my country China since I came here. For example, we celebrate our holidays with all family members and all relatives, but American people celebrate their holidays with their own family. They don’t care so much about other relatives.

Hello, everybody! I’m from Mexico. I have been living here for 8 months. In this short time, I have learned a few things about American culture. These things are, for example, what do the Americans do for living? And how it is different from what the Mexicans do for living. It is cheaper living here but housing is much more expensive than Mexico, so you have to work very hard to get a house. That’s just one of the differences between American and Mexican culture, but there are a lot of differences. If you are Mexican you can notice that.

Hi, I’m from Japan. I found many differences between Japanese culture and American culture. I have been in the U.S. since last December.
First of all, in my country, we don’t say “hi” to strangers. In the US, most people exchange greetings with each other. For example, this morning I said “hello” to my apartment worker and also I exchanged greetings with a stranger in my apartment building. Even if people worked near my house, they exchange greetings to each other. I think this is one of the nice cultural things in the U.S. When I go back to Japan, I will miss this American culture.
I also want to mention something bad about American culture. Every day I feel American food is bad. If people don’t have enough time, they’ll go to fast food places. Of course, in Japan we have a lot of fast food places, but people don’t eat there so much. In particular, we don’t eat at fast food restaurants for dinner. We Japanese enjoy more fun about food than the American.

When I came to the U.S., I found it was very different from Korea. For example, in Korea people usually ride a bus and subway or walk, but in here most people ride cars and they don’t walk very much. Here bus and subway systems are not very good.

I’m from Japan. I’ll write about one difference between my home country and here. Japanese people tend to speak indirectly, compared to American people. It might sound strange, but I like the way to communicate more directly. So, at this point, I feel so comfortable to live here. But, I’ve known that HKnese speak more directly than American people!! They speak soooo direct in Cantonese. It’s like WoW!! It was one of the biggest new discovery here.

I want to share my ideas how to learn English faster and easier. You know English is very difficult to learn but it is not. Follow these steps and you will learn English faster, the first step is to watch a lot of movies and news, try to understand the words they say, because even though you don’t understand what they say you will understand it by looking the pictures. Second step is try to talk in English more often even though you can not talk well enough they will understand you, don’t be afraid or shame of talking English because the more you talk more you’ll learn. The third step is pronunciation if you want to improve pronunciation you have to listen to music and sing together exactly how the singer sings.

I am from Taiwan. There is one thing that is a very good point to show the culture difference between America an Taiwan. The Chinese New Year and the New Year from the west are quite different. The New Year from the western side is always one month before Chinese New Year. The day before New Year many people will get together in the same big place to count from the end to celebrate the new year coming. Chinese New Year will give the red envelopes to their children and people will get together for a nice dinner.
Those two New Year celebrations are showing the culture differences between Taiwan and America

I from Paraguay but I’m Korean, so I know the culture of Korea and Paraguay. I’ve been in both places (Korea and Paraguay). There are many differences among cultures of Paraguay and the United States, like food, holidays and more, but the only thing that I thought, which is very different between Paraguay and the United States is Christmas, because in Paraguay we always celebrated with friends drinking champagne and play with the fireworks. It is the only day that we can play all day until the sun comes up. But in the United States we always have to stay with family, have dinner, share presents and I think that’s it, a little boring, I think.
I don’t know about U. S. A. people. But I think Paraguay Christmas is better. The culture of Korea and United States is very very different, in Korea 12 a.m. begins the day. That means there are a lot of places to go but in the United States 12 a.m. almost all the stores are closed . Also I think Korea is higher in technology because with one cell phone you can do internet, watch movies and buy stuffs too. But I think United States is a great place to live because here you can see all the cultures of the countries as the United States has all the people in the world.

I found out one special thing that American culture is different from that of my home country. The Chinese food and American food is really different.
What is “American food”? To many people, American food means hamburgers, hot dogs, fried chicken and pizza. If you have a “sweet tooth,” you might even think of apple pie or chocolate chip cookies. Americans on the go also tend to eat a lot of “junk food.” Potato chips, candy bars, soft drinks and other goodies are popular treats. Many people eat too many of these unhealthy snacks. But others opt for more healthy eating habits. Some even go “all natural.” They refuse to eat any food prepared with chemicals or additives. Of course, one of the most common quick American meals is a sandwich. Peanut butter and jelly is an all-time American favorite.
In fact, Except for Thanksgiving turkey, it’s hard to find a typically “American”food. The United States is a land of immigrants. So Americans eat food from many different countries. When people move to America, they bring their cooking styles with them. That’s why you can find almost every kind of food in America. Americans love Italian pizza, Mexican tacos and Chinese egg rolls.
Today, Chinese cooking is famous all over the world, but of course it did not become famous suddenly. China’s civilization is very ancient, and the art of cooking developed together with it over many thousands of years. It is not only good to eat, it is also nice to smell and to look at. Nobody can deny it. People from different countries all like Chinese food. Many people also learn to cook Chinese food. They often make dumpling and spring rolls.

Here the people use a lot the fast food and in Mexico mostly all the people eat at home. We have more relation with are relatives and the american dont have relation with them. The life here is more fast than Mexico, every body is running because they go to the work or one activity. And other is Academy culture. Many students go to Academy when their classes finished. It’s so tired. I hate this culture.
And other is militery culture. Korean adults went to the army. Korean militery is duty. It’s also tired, and I think also interesting.
And lunch time, We played soccer or played basketball. It’s funny.

When i was in China, i have nine classes in my middle school. It is means, Chinese students have to take more time to study, and we have no time to do any activities. Also our classes are different everyday, but we don’t need to move the classroom. So, we can learn different subject in different day, and save a little time to change the classroom. Besides the point of the courses, there was also some different on. In China, we pay more attention on the major course. So, we have masterly skill in the main subject, but we may ignore the extra subject sometimes. In America, we don’t separate the speciality until we go to the college. We have more time to consider which is your best choice, and also during that time, we can learn more knowledge. We can tell, the school in both country each have their own better way.

Even kids(>16) drive cars to school. Another example is that the school here is much easier than Chinese school. In China we go to school at 7:25.
and we go back home at 5:00. We study Science, Math, Chinese, Physics,
English, P.E, Government and history in one day~. Now in here we go to
school at 7:00, but we go home at 1:16. And we don’t study a lot of things
here. So that’s why I say American different is different from my country!

I am from Canada and I am going to focus on language to highlight a one particular difference between Americans and Canadians.
Many of you know that Canadians often use “eh” as a question tag at the end of a sentence. For example, “nice day eh?” or “you’re Canadian eh?” You can see that “eh” is quite similar to other question tags, for example, “nice day, isn’t it?” or “you’re Canadian, aren’t you?”
Many people often say that Canadians are polite. Having travelled, I very much agree with this assertion. In fact, I think that our use of “eh” is a kind of polite way to reduce the strength of our opinions and if possible find consensus with our speaking partner.
What do you think?

Hello, everyone! I am from China. I have found Canadian culture is so
different from that of my country.
Example one: usually Canadians use knife, spoon and fork and Chinese
people use chopsticks when they are eating.
Example two: usually Canadians eat raw vegetables such as salad, but
Chinese people like to eat cooked vegetables.
So many different living habits are between Canadian and Chinese. Now I am living in Canada and I am enjoying to learn Canadian cultrue.

Hi, every one.
I am from Korea. I have lived in Canada since the summer in 2004.
I have felt many cultural differences between Korea and Canada for over
2 years.
But I want to say two things which are most outstanding.
I think most Canadians emphasize the importance of family far more than
Korean. So they spend more time with their family compared to Korean.
When Canadians go to a trip or enjoy a leisure hours or eat out, they are
usually with their family.
In Korea, in those case, we are often with friends rather than family. Of
coure, we Koreans also enjoy our spare time with our family, but we like
to meet friends to do something togethe far more than Canadian.
Secondly, I think that when most Canadians do what they want they don’t
care about others’ feeling at all. I don’t mean they are rude. I mean they
don’t care how others feel about their action, as far as they don’t harm
others.
For example, I have ever seen many couples who kissed each other in a
public place, teenage boys who wear a little dirty clothes and put their
backpacks on the dirty, wet floor in a C-train and a fatty middle aged
woman dancing on a table in a bar surrounded drinking people.
She was a ordinary house-keeper just like me. It was suprising to me.
And I saw two people who fough severely and loudly regardless of others’
eyes.
Anyhow what I am going to say is that most Canadians frankly express
their feelingsin any places.
In Korea, we tend to study other’s face when we try to do a noticable
behavior even though it is never harmful to others.
I think this tendency is originated from Confucian tradition which lasted for
500 years until the end of 19th century in Korea.

I’m a Chinese, and I’ve been in Calgary for about six months. In my view, the way how people spend money is compeletely different here with my own country. In China, people believe that unexpected things often bother the ones who don’t have long-term plans. So they usually enjoy saving money for their future. Yet, it seems people here enjoy spending money to buy happiness now, it’s not easy for them to save money for their future.

Hello Everyone!
I’m from China. Now I live with an American family. There are 2 children in this family. I find American kids are more independent than Chinese ones. For instance, they know how to wear make up by maybe 13 or 14 years old. If they think their parents made a mistake, they will figure it out. In my opinion, Chinese kids can”t do that. Most of the time,
they usually follow what their parents say. Kids are cute in every country. I think Chinese kids need more independence, and American kids need to listen to their parents advice.

One of the big differences that I have noticed is that Canadians use a combination of British and American English, while Americans, of coarse, only use American English.
One example is with spelling:
1. Canadians might use “color” or “colour.” Americans just use “color.”

People in our country are still prefer to live in a joint family but American donot. In America women, have their liberty of freedom & speech but women in Bangladesh are still being dominated by men. Marriage of girl & boy in our country are still being arranged by parent as per their discreation & choice with some exceptional cases. I come from Chitral, Pakistan. That part of country is mountainous with high peaks, glaciers, and more snow fall during the winter season. Chitral district remains cut off for six months from Pakistan and other parts of the world due to high snow fall at the Lawari top (10500 feet from sea level). Although winter in that area is very harsh and people have less facilities, but Chitral is famous for its unique culture and freindly people like Canadians.I found Canadians more frindly, helpfull like those people live in Chitral Pakistan.
In Pakistan English is tought as a compulsary subject in public schools. After grade ten all science subjects are tought in English. English in Pakistan are spoken like British with the combination of local accents, which shows a unique kind of English language. Once in the work place in Canada, I started to talking in Pakistani style English. Nobody responced me, and one of co-worker asked me” do you speak English ?” I said of course I speak Enlish, then I realised that my accent is too different. After that I started to learn Amarican Pronounciation. Now I am able to speak and understand Amarican English. It is suggested to all immigrents to learn pronouciation, so that you can understand Amarican English very well.

2.) Transportation – Bikes and motor bikes. If you have a car, you’re rich.
3.) Construction – There are no building codes to be enforce.
4.) Currency – You can buy a cup of coffee for $0.03 US.
5.) Law – You’re guilty until proven innocent. No free speech.
6.) Crime – No patrol, even though crime rate is high at certain areas.
7.) Love – Your parents decides who you will marry (majority population).
8.) Penalty – Harsh prison terms for possesion of drugs. Death penalty for selling them.
9.) People – Good people, but they judge you base on your income, occupation, and status.
10.) Population – You are either extremly rich or extremy poor. There really no middle class.
I am really fortunate to live in America and am planning make use of open oppurtunities.

There are many cultural differences b/w India and USA.
1) school–uniforms are must in schools in India but in USA u can wear watever you want.
2)friendliness–people in US are friendly depending on whether you look nice or not but in india, ppl are friendly mostly depending on ur status, proximity to their houses etc.
3) Neighbors–I found this espeically different since in india, you KNOW ur neighbors and definitely talk to them atleast once a day but in US its not at all common to see neighbors being more than “hi-bye” type
for now, that’s all.

American culture is very similar to Australian, New Zealand and even the UK, except Americans are louder and of course your sports are different. Americans aren’t homogeneous though, I’ve met Americans from Oklahoma and the South who seem to have almost nothing in common with Americans from California. Sometimes I think the USA should be more accurately thought of as many countries under one umbrella similar to the various countries of the EU.

although culture in england & america is very similar, one thing i have noticed is the way strangers interact with each other.
for example, when in a store in america, the person working at the cash register is much more likely to make small talk with you than in england. over here, they usually just ask for the money. also american’s say ‘have a nice day’ a lot more.

As an American, I find it very interesting reading your comments. I have had several foreign students living with me from different countries, so I have learned alot about other cultures. When we had our Korean Student, I was surprised at several things: First, they count their age differently. Babies are considered 1 at birth, and everyone’s birthday changes over at Chinese New Year. Birthdays are as big of a deal there, I guess. Also, Korean food is very tasty, but much more spicey and salty than American food. Of course, they eat much more white rice, veggies, and tea than most Americans. Also, in Korean language, there is an addition to their words or their sentences if the person they are speaking to is even one day older than them. It is like another language for respect.

Also, right now we have a student from COLUMBIA. I didn’t realize that columbians don’t eat tacos or burritos. That is all Mexican Food. OF course, now that he is here, we realize how much Americans are taught more of the evils of Columbia, like the kidnappings and drugs, than the positive things of Columbia. For example, Columbians are very proud of their “perfect spanish” in Bogota. They claim they don’t have a weird dialect or slang like many places in Mexico and Latin America. They claim that although Spain Spanish is the spanish taught to most Americans, it should be their spanish because it is the purest of the spanish spoken by most people in spanish speaking countries.
Lastly, the japanese college-age students seem to be less independent than American college age students. Japanese seem to rely on their parents until well into their twenties for everything…money, meals, etc.
INTERESTING!

Hi, I am Mexican. Some of the major differences that I found are how our schools are managed. For example, in Mexico there are afternoon classes for middle school and high school. This is done do to the fact, that some young children have to work in the mornings to support their families, or some children just don’t like morning classes, which I find hilarious. In United States, obviously, the economy is great and some children don’t have to work, until they are 16 or 18 years old. Now that I’m on the topic of work, I remember I started working when I was 12 or 13 years old, which that makes a great difference for me between Mexico and United States. Other major differences are the holidays, the government, the food, the music, how society interacts with each other, how crimes are handled with in society, popular trends, services available to people, the climate, paying to use the restroom (because in Mexico you do!), and most simplest things like how Coca Cola has a thinner taste in Mexico, than United States Coca Cola does, which to me it has more gas in it. Anyways, I miss my Mexico!
