Improve English Vocabulary for Business

Sunday, June 12th, 2011

A solid English vocabulary is very important for success in today’s business world.  Many English learners understand this but I don’t believe they really know how much of a difference this can make for your career.  Western people don’t care too much about pronunciation honestly.  It’s not a big deal as long as people can understand what you are saying.

Having a really good vocabulary and know how and when to use it is extremely important however.  It makes you sound smart and educated.  It makes the bosses at western companies impressed.  They will see that you can understand and discuss important business ideas and other things.

Sometimes “flight attendants” have good pronunciation.  Of course not all the time, but sometimes they do.  But they don’t have a good vocabulary.  I fly on airplanes all the time so I have this experience.  Any business person, man or woman, can easily see this and they won’t want to give them a job.  It’s just common sense.   It’s easier to trust someone and respect their intelligence if they know how to use a wide variety of words when they are speaking.

I searched for a long time and tried many products to see what is the best thing for improving English vocabulary.  I don’t need to do this because I’m already a native speaker, but I do want to give good advice and help.  I gave the program to several of my friends and they absolutely love it.  I can see already that they are improving quickly after only a few weeks and one of them already got a really big promotion because of this.   It’s risk free and if you are serious about your business career, I really think you should give it a try.  As far as I know, it is the best thing on the internet for learning and remembering the important vocabulary that is necessary in the business world.  You will be able to express yourself really well in a very short time and be able to fluently talk about many topics.  Here it is:  Improve Business Vocabulary

I got this idea from a really cool site that has another amazing program.  If you use them together, your spoken English will improve really quickly as well.  Improve English Vocabulary Quickly

Practice English Writing for a Much Better Job

Sunday, January 30th, 2011

Written English is very important in many areas of the business world.  If you are a non native English speaker, you’ll need to practice your English writing in order to make it look reasonable.

There are many different kinds of English writing, and fortunately, the easiest ones are the ones necessary for business.  It’s difficult for anyone to write a novel or something creative.  Business writing is often Email writing or things of that nature.  The idea is to be clear and concise.  Your writing needs to make sense and look somewhat professional.  To be honest, it’s ok to write as a non native speaker.  Most of the world is used to reading English written by non native speakers.  No one is expecting to be amazed.

They do however have some serious standards.  You need to “get to the point” and make the reader feel that they totally understand the main idea of what you are writing.   They need to trust that you are a smart person.  In western culture, being clear and direct appears smart and professional.  If you write something long and use a lot of big words, you are impressing no one and you will lose business.

Your boss, or other bosses, will notice your English writing skills and be more likely to give you a better job in the future.  If you are writing to customers, then it’s very important because your customer is judging your whole company based on what they read.

Now the question is how to improve your writing skills.  Well, first you need to be on a private writing forum with a lot of high level writers.  You need to have some people correct your writing and give you advice.  If you use a free forum or something where anyone can write, you will never know if you are improving or not.  You will probably just keep making the same mistakes over and over again.  Luckily this is getting cheaper and better all the time.

Business English Writing Tips

Monday, September 6th, 2010

If you are a non-native speaker and you do business with native English speakers, you will need to learn to write effectively.

Writing perfectly isn’t really the main goal. What is important is learning the art of efficient communication. Here are a few tips to keep in mind when writing emails.

1. Keep them as short and simple as possible.

People in business are busy and don’t have the time or the energy to read a long email. This is not joy reading. They want to know the important information and nothing else. If you are scheduling a meeting, make the time, date, and location incredibly clear. Don’t waste time writing about other stuff that isn’t important to your objective.

2. If you aren’t sure how to use a word, don’t use it.

This is not the time to try to show off your new vocabulary. Most native speakers write in a simple manner anyway, and using unnecessary vocabulary looks unprofessional. It really looks bad if you try to use a word and use it in the wrong way. Stick to what you know.

3. Make a list of questions you think the other person would like answered.

Make sure you answer all the questions on that list. It is annoying to read someone’s email and find out you need to send them another email because they forgot to mention some important information. You could lose business deals this way and it makes your company look unprofessional.

4. Make sure you focus on what the other person wants and not what you want.

People would be much more likely to respond to an email that could help them. Imagine writing emails to companies asking them if you could buy something from them or telling them you would like to sell them something. Almost everyone will respond if you want to buy something from them. If you want help from someone else, make sure you can show them how you can genuinely help them. You always need to think win-win. People will usually be glad to do business with you if you can show them how they can benefit too. A lot of businesses make this one major mistake.

If you use these tips your writing could be much more effective in a business sense than even the writing of a native speaker who doesn’t follow them. The quality of the writing isn’t nearly as important as the clarity of ideas and the content. A long as you can get your point across, don’t worry too much. With that said, you still want to try your best and be careful. It looks better if there are less obvious mistakes. That is one extra benefit of keeping your writing short and simple. There will be less chance of making mistakes.
