Practice English Writing for a Much Better Job
Sunday, January 30th, 2011Written English is very important in many areas of the business world. If you are a non native English speaker, you’ll need to practice your English writing in order to make it look reasonable.
There are many different kinds of English writing, and fortunately, the easiest ones are the ones necessary for business. It’s difficult for anyone to write a novel or something creative. Business writing is often Email writing or things of that nature. The idea is to be clear and concise. Your writing needs to make sense and look somewhat professional. To be honest, it’s ok to write as a non native speaker. Most of the world is used to reading English written by non native speakers. No one is expecting to be amazed.
They do however have some serious standards. You need to “get to the point” and make the reader feel that they totally understand the main idea of what you are writing. They need to trust that you are a smart person. In western culture, being clear and direct appears smart and professional. If you write something long and use a lot of big words, you are impressing no one and you will lose business.
Your boss, or other bosses, will notice your English writing skills and be more likely to give you a better job in the future. If you are writing to customers, then it’s very important because your customer is judging your whole company based on what they read.
Now the question is how to improve your writing skills. Well, first you need to be on a private writing forum with a lot of high level writers. You need to have some people correct your writing and give you advice. If you use a free forum or something where anyone can write, you will never know if you are improving or not. You will probably just keep making the same mistakes over and over again. Luckily this is getting cheaper and better all the time.
