Teaching Dates The year is divided into two semesters. The first begins September 1st and ends in January (depending on the date of Chinese new year). The second semester begins at the end of February and lasts until mid July. There are three days holiday in October and May and one day off for Christmas and New Year. The break in between the semesters (January/February) is variable but normally lasts about six weeks. ¡ì How many hours will I teach per week? The contracted maximum is 16 periods (45 minutes each) but you may be given less. Actually, in the past years, most teachers work an average 10-12 hours each week. ¡ì Am I expected to teach every day (5 days a week)? No, you can work out a schedule with the secretaries so that you don't have to teach every day. Money Matters ¡ì What is the salary? There are three levels of salary. The first is for language teachers with no relevant qualifications and little experience. The second is for subject specialists with masters degrees and/or extensive experience. The third is for experienced higher education lecturers with proven research profiles (this would normally include a PhD). The actual amount varies from year to year and is not currently fixed for the year 2005, but is based on local rates for teaching staff in China. This years rates of pay range between 3,500 - 5,500 RMB a month. However additional benefits such as accommodation, airfare allowance effectively doubles the gross salary. If lecturers choose to work longer hours than the 16 they are contracted to teach, the Foreign Affairs Office can arrange additional paid work on campus and in the city. The cost of living in Zhaoqing is a fraction of that living in Europe or the USA. It is safe to say that you will not become rich by international standards teaching at Zhaoqing, but you will be able to live a very comfortable life. Lecturers who have come from European and American Universities in the past all report a rise in the quality and standard of living. ¡ì Is a return air fare provided? On completing an eleven month contract you will receive a 5,000 RMB air ticket allowance. For those working more than a year foreign teachers are paid the 12th month and also recieve the air fare bonus each year. ¡ì Do I have to pay for my work visa? No, work visas are paid for by the university. Students Class sizes vary depending on the subject (20 for art classes, 30-45 for language classes). ¡ì What is their English level? This varies greatly throughout the University. All students have been learning English from elementary school and have a basic ability to communicate in English. English Language students are reasonably fluent. ¡ì How can I teach a specialist subject if the students do not understand me? For specialists teaching outside the English department translators are provided for formal lectures. For practicals, lab time and workshops teachers should be able to communicate in English. ¡ì What are the teaching facilities like? Most class rooms have multimedia facilities to project computer presentations, play DVD's and radio microphones as well as traditional chalk boards. Housing All overseas lecturers are provided with free furnished accommodation on campus. ¡ì What is provided in the accommodation? Furniture, beds, cooking equipment, bedding, air conditioning / heating, fridge, TV, DVD player, washing machine, microwave, phone etc. ¡ì What bills do I need to pay? Electricity and water are free within a reasonable quota you are only responsible for the phone. ¡ì Can I get access to the Internet? If you have your own computer it is possible to arrange a broadband internet connection at home, otherwise you can use one of the internet Cafe's located outside the main campus. Is the apartment large enough for two people? Yes, each apartment has at least one bedroom, one sitting room, one bathroom, one kitchen and a balcony. Other Benefits Every year one 4 day trip is organised for the overseas lecturers and other shorter trips if requested. The contract normally has to be for at least one academic year (September to July). Getting to Zhaoqing When coming to Zhaoqing you can either fly to Hong Kong or Guangzhou. There are numerous alternatives of getting from Hong Kong to Zhaoqing but the simplest are, ¡ì The Ferry: There is a daily ferry directly to Zhaoqing leaving Hong Kong at 8:15 AM. Go to the China ferry terminal in Kowloon and buy a ticket from the Chu Kong Passenger Transport Company at the back of the departure lounge. 4 hr trip ¡ì The Train: At 2:30 PM a train leaves from the Hung Hom train station in Hong Kong to Zhaoqing. 4 hr trip Whichever you choose if you let us know when you will arrive in Zhaoqing we will meet you at the station or ferry terminal. The director is great, the apartment is from the 80’s but in very good condition, fully furnished and very big. The school itself is very nice and offers an extremely stress free working environment. Both the school and apartment are located in the Hyung-gok Dong area which is the nicest area in the entire city of Gumi. Pictures of the school, neighborhood, apartment and city are available, please just ask and I’ll forward them to your email. The apartment is also completely furnished with couches, tables, chairs, beds (2 bedrooms to yourself) dressers, TV, vcr, fridge, stove, utensils, washing machine, etc. I also had internet cables installed while I was there. About the city: Gumi is a medium city with a population of 400,000 people. Although it’s not a huge city it has a lot to offer in the downtown district and the surrounding neighborhoods. There are lots of cafes and bars to go to and there are 3 clubs that are basically foreigner bars where all the western teachers meet regularly. The westerners in the city are laid back people and are a very tight nit group consisting of teachers from all 6 English speaking countries. In total there are roughly 80 ? 100 western teachers in the city and more than 80% know and hang out regularly. I can easily point you in the right direction of where to go and meet people upon your arrival. Daegu, Korea’s 3rd largest city is also right next door and you can take a taxi to the downtown area in under 30 minutes or by train, also in under 30 minutes. Gumi is now considered the silicon valley of Korea because of its reputation as the countries leading developer of flat panel TV and computer monitors as well as cell phone lcd’s. The entire city is surrounded by mountains and is close to a number of ski resorts. There is a small lake next to the highest mountain in the city and there is also a small theme park with cafes and bars that are popular spots for tourists. Ultimately it’s a great location to absorb every aspect of Korea. The ocean is an hour and a half away in 3 directions, the 3rd biggest city is right next door, there are small traditional villages and rice fields within a 20 minute bike ride, etc, etc. If you’re interested in the position then please send your up-dated resume and a recent photo to the email address listed below.
