Hello, We are a small culture school located on the southern tip of Honshu Island (Japan), about 40 minutes by train from Shimonoseki - across the Kanmon straight from Kyushu island. Our city is called Sanyoonodashi and it has a population of about 30,000 people. We teach ''New Dance'' and ''English Conversation.'' At present we have 6 English teachers on our staff and 3 dance teachers. The dance teachers also carry out the day to day running of the school. University and College graduates from English speaking countries are offered a monthly salary of from Yen250, 000 - 270, 000 for a maximum 98 hours monthly teaching schedule. High school graduates from England, Canada, Australia and New Zealand can join us under Holiday/Work visa status and are offered a monthly salary of from Yen220, 000 - 230, 000 for a maximum 98 hours monthly teaching schedule. This salary will be increased to Yen230,000 ?Yen240,000 after completing six months of contract. Any hours taught over and above 98 hours are classed as overtime and remunerated at the rate of Yen2, 500 per hour. Our teachers aren't usually asked to put in office time. Teachers who are employed by us receive from 10 to 14 days paid vacation over Christmas and the New Year (plus two days off per week and relevant Japanese National holidays). The length of this holiday depends upon the school's teaching schedules at that time. If our teachers extend their contact by 6 months, they receive an extra 5 days paid vacation. If they extend their contract by one year, they receive an extra 10 days paid vacation. Requests for unpaid vacation are also seriously taken into consideration. BENDA covers all ''Apartment Key Money' expenses, only asking the teacher to pay his/her monthly rental costs (which are usually around Yen40, 000 to Yen55, 000 per month). We also put in a telephone line to all our teachers' apartments and provide each teacher with a small city car for both business and private use. The teacher being requested to pay the yearly tax/insurance for the vehicle (coming to around Yen4, 000 / Yen115, 000 per year respectively). Teachers joining us take over an existing apartment and have the opportunity to purchase furniture from an outgoing teacher. The Academy offers an interest free loan of up to Yen90,000 to cover this transaction and a year ending bonus of Yen25, 000 towards travel costs. The Academy covers work related accident insurance for all employees. We have no restrictions regarding our teachers socializing with their students, so there's always a good opportunity to learn about Japanese culture and study the Japanese language together with local friends. Located on the Siak River, which drains to the Strait of Malacca, Pekanbaru is the capital of Riau Province, which has the highest per capita income in Indonesia. Almost half of Indonesia's petroleum is produced in Riau, and much of Pekanbaru's economy is based on the petroleum industry. The city is connected by road to an oil refining and exporting port at Dumai, on the Selat Rupat, an inlet of the Strait of Malacca. Many facilities in Pekanbaru, including an airport, stadium, swimming pool, and the road to Dumai, were partially financed by oil companies working in the area. After oil was discovered in the region in the 1930s, Pekanbaru's economy has depended heavily on oil revenues. Little less than some places and a little more than others. Pekanbaru is located in North Sumatra and is a city of roughly 300,000 people. There are not many websites on Pekanbaru and those that do exist have wrongly portrayed Pekanbaru as a polluted and dirty city. This is not true at all. As a matter of fact, Pekanbaru is the home of some of the richest citizens in North Sumatra and is impeccably clean and well organized. Pekanbaru is not on the Indonesian tourist map because it does not have the tourist pull of a city like Bali or Jakarta. If you want to teach in a city where there are not 1,000's of foreigners and people actually treat you as a normal human being than Pekanbaru is the right place. Yes, overall you will not feel threatened in any way. In fact Indonesians are warm and friendly people who are genuinely interested in making friends with foreigners. Although at times there are demonstrations these are aimed at the government and not foreigners who have nothing to do with the political situation. •Do I need to obtain a specific visa before entering Indonesia? No, but you must have an open ended return ticket out of the country with a one year validity. Please also make sure that your passport has enough empty pages for rubber stamps and is still valid for at least six months after the date of arrival. •Will someone meet me at the airport? Yes, usually the Academic Coordinator or a staff member will welcome you at the airport with a car. •Do I need to bring Traveler's Checks or US notes? US notes will be fine; you can easily exchange US notes here at one of the local banks or money changers. •What kind of clothing do I need to bring? You need to bring some dress shirts and ties as well as slacks for teaching. As the weather is quite hot year round you will predominantly need T-shirts and shorts for everyday use. •What is the school dress code? Just as in a normal office, male teachers are required to wear trousers (not jeans) and a tie with either a short or long sleeved shirt during office hours. Sandals are not permitted so please bring some normal shoes. •Is there Academic support and training? Yes, the Academic Coordinator as well as senior teachers are always available to lend a hand or give advice and support to new teachers in skills development. Workshops will be conducted on a regular basis to further all teachers' skills academically. •What academic resources are available to teachers? We provide a comprehensive resource library for supplementary materials that can be used in lesson preparation. A television with both a VCD and VHS player are available as well as board games and a computer room with interactive English teaching software appropriate for all age levels. In addition any useful teaching tool that can be obtained by the school will be added on an ongoing basis to further our commitment to assisting teachers by providing them with all the necessary tools for effective English language teaching. •Do I need to get shots / injections before coming to Indonesia? It is not absolutely necessary but it is advisable to have your regular immunizations done before coming over. •How does the electrical system work in Indonesia? The electrical system works on a 220-volt power system. North American appliances will not fit into conventional Indonesian wall sockets. You will need a power converter for 220-volt if you are planning on bringing an electrical device. •Will I be guaranteed an accommodation upon my arrival? We will make sure that the house is arranged and ready before you come. However, in case your permanent house is not yet available, you will stay at one of the teacher's house temporarily until your house is completely ready. |
