Most people ride bikes, as it's all flat, but there are thousands of taxis if you prefer. Compared with other large cities, Tianjin is regarded as conservative, and known to be safer to live in than most. Certainly the traffic conditions (crowded but co-operative) make cyclists feel safer than in most western cities. It's not a major tourist destination, although there are interesting areas showing the architectural influence of western imperialism in previous centuries, as well as traditional Chinese architectural features. Modern western influence is found in the large number of multi-national companies and joint ventures now operating and doing very well. Living Costs The living costs in Tianjin are recognised as being very much lower than in other large cities; e.g. the basic taxi fare in Tianjin is 5RMB, compared with 10RMB in Beijing. If you choose to avoid spending all your time and money on the luxurious ex-pat lifestyle, you can save quite a lot of money for sending home to pay the bills there. It is easy to live on 1000RMB per month. Beijingers come to Tianjin for their shopping, because itís cheaper here. It's very easy to do your regular shopping, as there are street markets for all kinds of food and groceries within easy walking distance of most places, as well as more up-market supermarkets, including some which specialise in imported western-style foods. There are restaurants and takeaway food stalls everywhere, at all price levels. You can typically expect to pay around 15 - 20RMB for a good average restaurant meal. A large and nourishing takeaway lunch costs about 4 - 5 RMB. It's not far from the mountains or the sea or Beijing, so trips there are feasible for a day out, or a weekend.
